HERITAGE OTTAWA

Heritage Ottawa took advantage of the celebratory Heritage Day mood at City Hall on February 19 to present our annual Gordon Cullingham Research and Publication Fund to this year's recipients, Carolyn Gillespie and Emily Guy.

Ottawa researcher Emily Guy is undertaking “The History of Cambridge Street, Ottawa,” a socio-cultural history of an important but unassuming street in Centretown-West with a diverse cultural landscape that has been overlooked in neighbourhood studies.

Working with Women of Architecture, Ottawa architect Carolyn Gillespie is researching the contributions of women architects who have worked in Ottawa with the aim of raising awareness of their contributions to the city’s built environment. A user-friendly, folded pocket-sized map and online digital map will be developed.

The funding awards were presented to Ms. Guy and Ms.Gillespie by Janet Irwin, Gordon Cullingham’s widow, and Heritage Ottawa president David Jeanes.

The Gordon Cullingham Research and Publication Fund was established by Heritage Ottawa in 2008 in honour of the late Gordon Cullingham, journalist, broadcaster, editor and heritage activist. The funds are presented annually to encourage research on Ottawa's built heritage. This year's winning projects were selected from among three applicants who applied for the 2019 grant.

Board members Linda Hoad, Hunter McGill and Julie Dompierre were also on hand at the Heritage Ottawa exhibit, speaking with members of the public.
